Basic operations

< Previous Page

Four videos are produced here to show basic operations such as manual multiplication, automatic division and automatic multiplication.
The fifth video shows a way for opening the machine

  • Multiplication performed semi-automatically.
  • Fully automatic positive division.
  • Fully automatic positive multiplication.
  • Multiplication with great numbers.

Video 1

1) The first video shows a semi-automatic multiplication by means of a sequence of carriage shifts and additions.
Let us compute 57 multiplied by 123. It can be broken down into (57 x 3) + (57 x 20) + (57 x 100).

So, the sequence of operations is:
– Engage the Repeat key
– Type 57 and press 3 times the “+” key.
– Shift the carriage one position to the right.
– Press twice the “+” key
– Shift the carriage one position to the right
– Press once the “+” key.
We see that Register III displays 57, Register II displays 123, and Register I displays the result 7011.

Video 2

2) The second video shows a fully automatic division on a model 20.
Let us compute 7879 divided by 6767.

The sequence of operations is:
– Type 7879 on the left of the keyboard and press the ” : ” key. The carriage is automatically moved to the extreme right and the dividend entered into Register I.
– Type 6767 on the left of the keyboard and press the “DIV” key. The calculation begins and the quotient is recorded, digit by digit, into Register II. The remainder is given in Register I.
Thus, the result is 1.164326880 and the remainder is 0.00000304.

Video 3

3) The third video shows a fully automatic multiplication on a model 20.
Let us compute 77777 multiplied by 66666.

The sequence of operations is:
– Type 77777 on the keyboard and press the multiplication-bar. The multiplicand is automatically transferred into Register V.
– Type 66666 on the keyboard and press again the multiplication-bar. The multiplication starts and proceeds until the complete Product is shown in Register I, and the first factor, previously in Register V, is shown in Register II.
Thus, the result is 5’185’081’482.

Video 4

4) The fourth video shows a multiplication with two factors of nine digits.

Let us compute 123456789 multiplied by 123456789.
We see that the machine is able to make the calculation, giving the product: 15’241’578’750’190’521

Video 5

5) The fifth video shows the method for opening a machine, in order to repair or clean the various parts.
